Current State of Cycling, October 30, 2008 |
Well after two successful and fun trade shows, it’s time to take a look at the current State of Cycling. Things are looking great! For us cycling enthusiasts, the end of 2008 is beginning to feel like a tipping point. Statistics from around the world and all the chatter we heard at the trade shows reveal that people are coming back to the bike in a big way. A whole lot more people are out on the street riding bikes than there were last year. Bike shops and biking advocates are reporting that the use of bikes for practical purposes — running errands, commuting — has soared in the past six months, largely as a result of high gas prices. With Europe leading the way, cities and towns around the world are adapting in big and small ways — closing off city centers to automobile traffic, building bike parking lots near train and bus stations and constructing thousands of miles of bike paths. Recently Seattle, Washington pledged $240 million dollars to a bicycle initiative that hopes to triple the number of city residents who pedal to work turning their traffic-clogged roads into Bike City USA. It’s a relief to see this trend of local and national governments giving high priority to cycling. Bike use is moving from being more than just a fun healthy activity to a mainstream mode of transportation.

The Interbike Show, September 25, 2008 |
| Vegas Baby! The Velo team is truly loving the warm sunshine and all the activities here at Interbike, North America’s largest bike show. Again, the best opportunity to get some riding time in on all the latest bikes was at the Outdoor Demo. The mood has been extremely positive with lots of interest in the bike industry this year in America because of the high gas prices and the thousands of people turning to their bikes to commute. In fact, it’s quite amazing the number of exhibitors and visitors we heard talking about the incredible rise in people now using bicycles to ride to work, a quick trip to the corner grocery store or an outing with their family. As the show winds down tomorrow, we are enjoying our best Interbike ever and the team is super excited about all the vibes at our booth! |

Back from the Eurobike Show, September 10, 2008 |
What started out as a small mountain-bike only show 17 years ago has really grown! The whole Velo team had a great time this year at the biggest Eurobike show ever. With more than 36,000 official visitors showing up this year, our booth was always packed and there was a wonderful “feel good” atmosphere the whole week. Fueled up by multiple trips to the waffle and Nutella stands that were all around the halls, the Velo team is all packed and bracing themselves for the Interbike show in Las Vegas, Nevada which kicks off in a couple of weeks. |
